Verified Gross Mass VGM
Safety and compliance
At Terramar, we provide container and vehicle weighing services (Verified Gross Mass – VGM) in full compliance with SOLAS regulations and the requirements of ocean carriers.
We carry out weighing operations using two certified truck scales – weightbridges located at our warehouses:

Gdansk Warehouse, ul. Kontenerowa 21 – within the Port of Gdansk, near Baltic Hub.

We have new, certified, high-precision scales and are authorized (AEO Certificate)
to issue documents confirming the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of containers.
Why does VGM matter?
Safe sea transport
VGM is the Verified Gross Mass of a container — the total weight of the cargo, packaging, and the container itself.
Since 2016, it has been mandatory under the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) Convention – without VGM, a container cannot be loaded onto a vessel.
Accurate VGM protects against accidents caused by uneven load distribution on board.
It also enables efficient stowage planning, reduces delays and enhances the overall safety of operations.
VGM with Terramar - how it works
What does our container weighing service include?
- Professional weighing of containers and vehicles using calibrated truck scales.
- Option to weigh the entire loaded container or calculate the weight by adding the cargo weight and the container’s tare weight.
- VGM documentation with signature, ready to be submitted to the carrier and terminal.
- Dedicated account manager.
Who is the VGM service for?
Importers and exporters
Terramar’s VGM weighing service is the ideal solution for exporters and importers using sea containers who wish to remain compliant with regulations and avoid unnecessary delays. It is also a great fit for companies involved in intermodal transport combining road, rail, and port operations.
Our services are used by companies for which timeliness, safety, and control over the entire logistics process are crucial. VGM is also the perfect choice for anyone who expects the highest service standards, a single point of contact, and comprehensive handling of the entire supply chain – from loading to final delivery.

Container Weight Verification – SOLAS
Since July 1, 2016, according to the newly implemented regulations, the shipper is required to verify the gross mass of containers before loading them onto a vessel (SOLAS Convention – Safety of Life at Sea).
* In accordance with paragraph 2.1 of SOLAS regulations, the total weight of the container must be verified by the shipper using one of two methods:
Method 1 – by weighing the entire, packed container using a certified or legalized measuring device.
Method 2 – by weighing all the contents of the container – cargo, packaging, and securing materials – and adding the resulting weight to the container’s tare mass. (This method requires approval from the Maritime Office Director.)
* Shipper – the entity listed as the “shipper” on the bill of lading, sea waybill, or other multimodal transport document, and/or the entity that has concluded a carriage contract with the shipping company, or on whose behalf such a contract has been concluded.
The deadline by which the shipper must provide the VGM will be set by the shipping line.
Shipping lines should provide the shipper with accurate container tare mass information in a timely manner, allowing the shipper to correctly determine and submit the VGM on time.
The shipper cannot be held responsible for incorrectly provided tare weights by the container owner.
The permissible margin of error for determining the VGM has been set at ±5%.
Benefits of using VGM services
Thanks to our precision and experience, you significantly reduce the risk of errors, delays, or hazardous situations resulting from improper loading.
Accurate weighing enables better planning of logistics operations, leading to time savings and process optimization.
Our service fully complies with the SOLAS Convention, eliminating the risk of fines or container detention at the terminal.
Importantly, we provide comprehensive support by combining weighing with warehousing, customs, and transportation services within one integrated logistics solution.
